Exeter Rugby Club

Based in Exeter, Devon, the Exeter Rugby Club is a rugby union club which was formed in the year 1871 and played the first match in the first match in the 1873. They were re branded as The Exeter Chief and they play in two strip colors namely Black which is the Home color and White which is the away color.

The full name of the Exeter Rugby Club is the Exeter Chief Rugby Club and they play in the top tier of the English rugby which is the Aviva Premiership which was promoted on the 26th of May in the year 2010. That was the day when they beat the Bristol Rugby. The ground in which the Exeter Rugby Club plays is the Sandy Park which has a capacity of 10,744. The Exeter Rugby Club had their former home ground based in County Ground. They had this change done in the year 2006.

The Chairman of the Exeter Rugby Club is Tony Rowe and the coach is Rob Baxter. Rob Baxter is the team’s present coach.

The history of the team goes as such. In the year 1905 when the Devon played a match against the All Blacks at the County Ground, it had attracted a crowd of 6000.  At that point of time, Thomas Kelly played lock for The Exeter Rugby Club and is the only player of the team. Thomas Kelly had also captained England and led the English team to a massive victory with the score line reading 19-0 over France at the Stade Colombes in Paris in the year 1908 on the 1st of January. Not only that, The Exeter Rugby Club also reached the final position of the EDF Energy Trophy, formerly known as the Power gen Shield in four of the total seven seasons which was held right from 2002 to 2008. Unfortunately, The Exeter Rugby Club finished runners up on each occasion.

In the recent past, The Exeter Rugby Club beat Bristol by a massive margin with the score line being 29-10, held in the Memorial Stadium in the year 2010.The supporters have a common chant which is the tomahawk chops which are often accompanied by drums during matches.

In the year 2009-10 RFU championship, the Exeter Rugby Club finished second on the points table, being behind Bristol by four points and defeating London Welsh by twenty eight points. However in the current season, in the English Premiership table the team has witnessed a drop in the overall performance by landing 8th in the overall points table lagging by thirty four points to the winner of the season, Leicester Tigers.

The Exeter Rugby Club has 47 players in its current squad with some renowned players like Ben White, Jane Hanks, Chris Bently, Simon Alcott and a few others. The Exeter Club also has internationally capped players such as Gonzalo Camacho, Ignacio Mieres, Chade Slade, and Craig Mitchell. The captain of the team is Tommy Hayes.
