The captain of Exeter Chiefs, Gareth Steenson is enjoying a “new challenge” And the challenge is starting the season of Aviva Premiership as a defending champion.


The pulsating victory of Chiefs’ Premiership final over Wasps in May at Twickenham saw them having a remarkable rise and it is from the lower divisions of English rugby to reaching at the peak.

But when Exeter launches their league campaign on September 1st opposite the West Country rivals Gloucester at Kingsholm under the floodlights of the Friday night.

Steenson the Fly-half of the team extra-time penalty preserved the glory of the title for Exeter and in the squad of last season; they retained the awesome majority, while adding players like Matt Kvesicflanker and Nic Whitescrum-half.

Steenson on the occasion said, “For us, this truly a brand new experience. Our performance in Europe was not that well, and this something that we will talk about for sure.”

He further added that, “Probably now, we are not the second favorite team of everyone any more. Now, we are no more a plucky underdog, and this is a completely new thing for us.”

The Anglo-Welsh cup has already gotten to the round three stage and on Saturday, Wasps will face Exeter Chiefs at the Sandy Park on away.


In their ranks, they would be travelling with a mix of experience and talent. In the opening two rounds. Wasps have emerged not quite unscathed, with one win to their name, and a loss as well.

For the Exeter Chiefs, they seem a more formidable team as the last two seasons of the competition has seen them emerge as winners and runners up.

The Exeter Chiefs would be playing against the Northampton Saints on Friday, 30th September 2016. In this Premiership event Calum Clark would be playing who was part of the warm up squad of the 2015 World Cup team of England. The Franklin’s gardens would be opening up for this day as the game kicks off in the evening hours. Calum Clark would be taking the role of the England flanker and this would be his first appearance after he played for the Northampton Saints in May 2015.

When it comes to the Exeter team, the head coach has stated on Radio in Devon that Jack Nowell would be on the bench this time as he has suffered a thumb injury and subsequent surgery recently. As Jack has come back from his surgery for about ten days or a week, he would avoid playing as falling or catching will affect his thumb more.

The win that Exeter had over Bristol Rugby has definitely hoped the team to get their confidence back this season. After suffering two losses beginning of the season, the head coach of Exeter Chiefs, Rob Baxter, has been applauded as the man of the match after the successful win against Bristol Rugby. This game definitely helped to turn around the fortunes of the team.

The Chiefs have been able to get victories and bonus points in the performance that they showcased. Woodburn made a double that was added by Sam Hill as well as by Thomas Waldrom. The Chiefs ended up with a victory score of 41 over 17 against their rival team. The game was played at Ashton Gate. Even though Baxter felt that the team could have performed better, the game has definitely seen Exeter improve in their team performance.
